What is Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy?

Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS) is a specialised non-surgical procedure designed to treat varicose veins, particularly the surface veins and their branches that feed into the larger “trunk” veins. UGS uses ultrasound imaging to precisely guide the injection of a sclerosant solution into these veins. The sclerosant causes the veins to collapse, after which they are naturally absorbed by the body, resulting in clearer legs and improved circulation. This procedure is highly effective for treating complex and winding veins. UGS is a safe, minimally invasive treatment option that helps you regain comfort and confidence in your appearance.

What to Expect During Your Treatment

The procedure for Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy is straightforward, safe, and minimally invasive. Here’s what you can expect:

  • Consultation: A thorough consultation with Dr. Zach Kidman to discuss your symptoms, concerns, and the best treatment options for you.
  • Ultrasound Imaging: A sonographer will use ultrasound technology to identify and map the veins to be treated.
  • Management discussion: the results of the ultrasound and the diagnosis will be discussed. This includes lifestyle strategies, treatment options, expected treatment benefits and treatment risks. A patient then has the opportunity to decide on their preferred management option.
  • Injection: Treatment occurs at a second appointment, giving the patient the opportunity to review the consent form at home. At the treatment appointment, the foamed sclerosant solution will be carefully injected into the targeted veins under ultrasound guidance.
  • Post-Treatment: You can return to your daily activities immediately after the procedure. Patients will need to walk regularly. We recommend wearing compression stockings to support the healing process.
