What is Radiofrequency Ablation?

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a targeted treatment for larger varicose veins, particularly the main “trunk” veins that feed into smaller branches. The procedure involves inserting a slim heating catheter into the affected vein under ultrasound guidance. Once in position, radiofrequency energy is delivered in carefully timed bursts, typically around 20 seconds each, to gently heat the vein walls.

This heat acts on the collagen within the vein wall, causing it to contract and seal shut. Over time, the closed vein is naturally absorbed by the body and blood is redirected to healthier veins. RFA is highly effective, minimally invasive, and offers long-lasting results.
